Full-time Ecologist/Senior Ecologist

Capita Symonds are currently looking for experienced ecologists who are already efficiently managing projects to completion and less experienced assistant ecologists and seasonal staff. The position is a challenging role for a professional ecologist in a fast developing multi-disciplinary ecology team.  This role will suit a self-motivated, knowledgeable and enthusiastic ecologist with a desire to influence the development of the Ecology Team.  The role will demand experience of project management with a proven track record of effective and successful team management to ensure timely completion of projects to assist in the efficient day-to-day running of the team.  

The role offers the potential to work on a varied range of projects in the education, justice, housing, renewables, waste and highways sectors for a range of public sector and private clients.  Our portfolio of work is very varied including habitat and protected species surveys and mitigation schemes, vegetation monitoring and on site ecological supervision covering a range of locations across the country, delivering projects from the Lake District to the Midlands alongside our local commitments around Lancashire.

The Ecology & Countryside Team are based in East Lancashire but work across the north of the country particularly Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria with potential to work in the North East and Scotland in the future therefore a flexible office base may be negotiable but strong links with the team based in Blackburn will be  necessary.


Responsibilities
You will be a key member of the Ecology Team who will actively lead on technical aspects of the day to day work carrying out surveys to complete projects that will range from initial Extended Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, to more detailed NVC and vegetation monitoring surveys as well as a wide range of protected species surveys, particularly great crested newt and bat surveys. You will be responsible for ensuring the advice and recommendations resulting from these surveys are communicated effectively to clients through written reports and verbal communication including mitigation, compensation, restoration, enhancement, monitoring and management.

The role requires a team leader who will play a key role within the team liaising with clients, mentoring colleagues and providing a key point of contact within a larger multidisciplinary consultancy which provides opportunities for the full integration of ecological considerations into the overall design process.  Many of our projects require close working with clients to help them through the planning and licensing processes which offer proactive opportunities for biodiversity conservation.  Experience of working within and advising clients through these processes is essential.   

In addition to the above you will also provide support to and work with the Ecology & Countryside Manager to attain high standards of work and feed into internal financial and business development reporting procedures.


Essential Criteria
• Degree in ecology or related subject
• Full membership (or eligibility for full membership) of IEEM
• Good interpersonal skills and experience of successful team management
• Experience of successful ecology project management
• Understanding of and experience in Phase 1 Habitat, NVC and botanical surveys
• Experience of protected species surveys and holder of relevant licences (particularly Science & Education Bat and/or Great Crested Newt licences)
• Experience of designing and managing mitigation schemes
• Good working knowledge of wildlife and conservation legislation
• Excellent report writing and communication skills
• Knowledge and awareness of planning process and policy
• Experience within an ecological consultancy or similar field
• Driving licence


Desirable Criteria     
• Holder of Science & Education Bat Survey Licence
• Experience of using GIS software for ecological purposes
• Experience of BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes Assessments
