Full-time SCHOOL TRAVEL ADVISOR (ASSISTANT)

at Capita Symonds (Anywhere)


We are looking to appoint 2 experienced School Travel Advisors to support Re's School Travel Plan Coordinator in the development, implementation, review and monitoring of School Travel Plans in London Borough of Barnet. You will be responsible for the liaison and support for a proportion of the Borough’s schools and will assist the Coordinator with initiatives that promote more sustainable travel to children/ young people and their families as well as to school staff and other parts of the school community. Promotion of the School Travel Plan programme to a range of stakeholders will also be part of your role.
You must have excellent written and communication skills as well as good numeracy skills.

Context and Purpose of the Job
• To assist in the development, promotion and co-ordination of the delivery of School Travel Plans and provide support for the implementation of actions and initiatives resulting from them and assist in the development of a strategy for the long term provision of support for School Travel Planning to ensure its long term sustainability.
• To liaise with Head Teachers, teachers, parents, governors, police and health authority, Road Safety team, Engineers and Councillors.
• To assist in the promotion of effective and efficient Service development and support issues that will improve the overall performance and delivery of all the activities within the Service.

Accountable for:-
Key Accountabilities Specific for This Post
• To assist in the development and co-ordination of support for school communities creating and implementing School Travel Plans (STPs), assisting schools to progress funding bids.
• To assist in the formation and facilitating of a group of relevant partners into a School Strategy Group to support the development of a local strategy to promote and implement school STPs across the authority linking to appropriate transportation, education, social inclusion health and community strategies.
• To assist in developing and implementing a promotion and publicity strategy for school travel plans which will ensure that schools are aware of and know how to access relevant and appropriate information about school travel plans through presentations and existing publications and through the identification of other opportunities.
• To assist in reviewing existing school travel plan guidelines (both locally and nationally) and consider and develop additional supporting information (e.g. case studies and funding guidance).
• To build upon and develop effective working relationships with a range of individuals, agencies and organisations (both internally and externally) to ensure that available resources, information and expertise are maximised to the benefit of school communities.
• To assist in co-ordinating and supporting carefully planned integrated work with partners from Re’s, police and health authority, parishes, schools, parents, local communities and other agencies to assist the development and implementation of STPs that will improve safety and reduce car dependence on the  journey to school.
• To assist in reviewing existing monitoring and evaluation procedures and to develop and implement ways to accurately determine and record progress made by schools tackling and implement STPs.
• To provide regular progress reports to the School Travel Advisor, local School Travel Strategy Group and nationally via Regional School Travel Advisors.

Financial and Asset Responsibilities
• To assist in the control of specific areas of income and expenditure for which the Service is responsible, employing financial systems to monitor spend throughout the year ensuring budgetary control.

Staff Responsibilities
• Junior staff on day to day or project by project basis, as allocated.
• Consultants and contractors undertaking work for Re as directed.

Other - Performance Measures
(i) Contribution to programme achievement.
(ii) To contribute to budget achievement.
(iii) Adherence to Re’s Standing Orders, contractual procedures and the preparation of comprehensive contract records for all projects.
(iv) Contributions to reports and other documents.
(v) Technical competence.
(vi) Contribution to the delivery of Quality Guarantee promises.

• Experience of working in one or more of the following areas:  transport, planning, traffic engineering, road safety, education
• Demonstrable understanding of the Primary and Secondary Education system
• Experience of undertaking public consultation and working with schools and educational establishments
• Knowledge of Evaluation and Monitoring relating to children’s learning
• Experience of meeting with elected members and governors
• Experience of administrative processes
• Organisational skills for planning activities.
• Ability to work as part of a team and also able to work on own initiative within defined parameters
• Good verbal communicator
• Good written and grammar skills


• Knowledge of School Travel Strategies and Plans
• Able to use IT and be familiar with packages such as Word, Excel,    Access and Power Point
• 5 GCSE passes (D and above)
• GCSE English language and mathematics (level C minimum)
• Valid Driving Licence
• Own means of transport
• Good basic numeracy


• Flexible working lifestyle
• Ability to attend out of hours meetings and able to occassionally work outside normal working hours
• No criminal offences against children and Reference to national records where necessary
