If you're looking for Estate Agent Jobs, whether you're a school leaver, graduate, experienced estate agent or looking to change career then despite the reputation, you'll be in good company.

There are over 10,000 Estate agencies in the UK and around 50,000 estate agents (Telegraph, 2008).  Although the industry has shrunk in recent years there are many opportunities for both experienced estate agents and those looking to forge a career in estate agency.

The skills required of Estate Agents are valued in many industries: tenacity, organisation, people skills, willingness to learn, resilience.  Experience is not the be all and end all for those looking to move in to a career in estate agency and if you can demonstrate the abilities above then you may find it easier than you think to get your first estate agency role.

The Industry

The industry ranges from single office, owner-operated businesses to corporate brands and large franchise networks.  For those willing to build their experience and with an entrepreneurial bent, the industry presents great opportunity for starting one's own business.

The internet has had a great impact on the industry and a shift away from the High Street is anticipated by many in the industry.  Many agencies rely heavily on Property Portals such as Rightmove, Primelocation and Zoopla to market their properties on the internet.  This has largely taken over from newspaper advertising but walk in trade and leaflet drops are still important marketing strategies for many estate agents.

Online Estate Agents (also known as low cost estate agents) have entered the market with a business model that uses property websites to market properties but cuts costs by doing away with the High Street Office and offering a national service.  Although they only account for a small proportion of overall property sales, these online estate agents have come to offer a serious challenge to the traditional model of buying and selling houses.

As an Estate Agent you will be expected to have a working knowledge of computers and office software such as microsoft word, outlook and excel.  You may have to draft letters to clients and you will probably use some in-house software to manage your clients and marketing.

Professional Bodies:

The National Association of Estate Agents ( is the leading industry body but it is not mandatory for Estate Agents to belong.  Members have the advantage of offering clients the security that:

- They belong to a redress scheme

- They have professional indemnity insurance

- They undertake continuous professional development

- They follow a code of practice and rules of conduct

The National Federation of Property Professionals ( is an umbrella organisation covering the NAEA (above), the Association of Residential Letting Agents, The Institution of Commercial and Business Agents, The National Association of Valuers and Auctioneers and The Association of Professional Inventory Providers.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (

Members must have a relevant degree in property from an accredited university, 2 years of post qualification experience (PQE), pass entrance exams and undertake professional development throughout their career.  Unlike the NAEA it is the individual who is a member not the organisation - full members may use the title MRICS (Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
